World Contraception Day with Exeltis Pharma (ADV)

In conjunction with World Contraception Day, Nuffnang invited me to attend a Blogger’s Roundtable media session @ Hilton PJ HOTEL. This event is organized by Exeltis Pharma, a pharmaceutical division of the CHEMO Group.

As usual, I was the early bird! I arrived way early & ended up waiting for other bloggers*yawns* Some SELCA time while waiting 😛

Look at the yummy breakfast buffet prepared for us! *yummy tummy*

FINALLY… time to start the media session in the Kristal Suite. They provided sweets & a jar of ‘sticky’ candies to wake us up after indulging so much good food!

The main reason of the media session is to raise public awareness on the health benefits of oral contraceptive (OC) pills & to encourage females to take action in improving health through OC pills.
Dr. KK Iswaran – Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist giving us a knowledgeable talk

The talk was very informative! It was said that, the use of contraceptive pills is very low in Malaysia. Less than 4 percent of women (ages 15 – 49) take these pills. Can you imagine? Less than 4 percent! And it was also found that about 30% of births in Asia Pacific are unintended & unplanned! With so many unwanted births (and unplanned) it is a no wonder health and well-being of women were affected.

In actual fact, OC pills are not only meant for preventing pregnancies. Numerous reproductive health conditions can also be improved or prevented with OC pills. Health benefits of OC pills include treating & preventing acne, irregular periods, endometriosis, and premenstrual syndrome (PMS), among other things. Treating some of these conditions can help in reducing the risk of ovarian and endometrial cancer in the long term, thereby meeting unmet reproductive health needs among women.

Here are the benefits in details:

OC pills contain both oestrogen & progestin which lowers the amount of androgens (group of hormones that stimulate the production of oil on the skin). This will obviously cause skin to be less oily skin & less acne.

Researchers found that using OC pills for a year or more will protect females against uterine cancer & ovarian cancer. OC pills are also suggested to use as chemoprevention against ovarian cancer in females with breast cancer susceptibility genes (BRCA) mutations.

 Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
OC pills help control acne and menstrual-related problems by stopping ovulation or stabilising hormone levels.

 Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)
OC pills containing ethinylestradiol (EE) and drospirenone have shown improvement in PMDD symptoms. These pills have been shown to offer relief from both physical and psychological PMDD symptoms with improvement in health-related quality of life.

Disturbance of Menstrual Cycle
OC pills can fix irregular menstrual cycles, to ensure they occur on a monthly basis. OC pills help balance the hormonal levels in our body.

  Side Effects and Risks:
Most females do not develop any side effects from OC pills. However, a small number of women develop nausea, headaches or sore breasts when using the pill. However no worries, as these symptoms usually go away within days or weeks of starting the pill.

During the talk, I was so happy that I won a power bank too!

Anyhow, it’s important that we as females take care of our health & to educate ourselves of OC pills 🙂
